Who Gets Free NHS Dental Treatment?

In England, NHS dental treatment is not free for everyone. However, a significant number of people qualify for exemptions. You're entitled to free NHS dental treatment if you are under 18, under 19 and in qualifying full-time education, pregnant or have had a baby in the past 12 months (with a valid MatEx certificate), or receive qualifying benefits such as Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit guarantee credit, or Universal Credit (where you meet the criteria).

You may also qualify if you hold a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate or an HC2 certificate issued through the NHS Low Income Scheme. An HC3 certificate entitles you to reduced charges rather than fully free treatment. War Pensioners may also receive free treatment for conditions related to their accepted disability.

If you claim an exemption that you're not entitled to, the NHS Business Services Authority (NHS BSA) may issue a penalty charge notice of up to £100 on top of the treatment cost. Always carry your exemption evidence when attending a dental appointment.
